Understanding the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP): What It Means for Dental Patients in Canada

For many Canadians, access to dental care has long been a financial challenge. But that’s changing. In 2024, the Canadian government began rolling out the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)—a national initiative aimed at expanding access to oral healthcare for eligible Canadians who do not have private dental insurance. At Erbsville Dental, we believe informed patients make the best decisions about their care. Here’s what you need to know about this new federal plan, who qualifies, and what’s covered.

Who Qualifies for the CDCP?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan is being rolled out in phases, with eligibility currently based on income, age, and insurance status. To qualify, patients must:

• Be a Canadian resident with a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN).
• Have no access to private dental insurance.
• Have an adjusted family net income of less than $90,000 per year.
• Be 65 or older, a child under 18, or an adult who qualifies for the Disability Tax Credit (more groups will be added over time).

If your household income is under $70,000, you will receive the highest level of coverage with no co-pays. Those with incomes between $70,000 and $90,000 may still qualify but will pay a portion of the dental costs out of pocket.

Applications are managed through Service Canada and are being gradually opened to eligible groups. Be sure to check the Government of Canada’s website for current application timelines and eligibility updates.

What Services Are Covered?

The CDCP aims to cover a wide range of essential oral health services. While exact coverage depends on the procedure and the provider’s fees, here’s an overview of what’s generally included:

• Routine Exams & Cleanings
  Includes checkups, scaling, polishing, and fluoride treatments to maintain good oral hygiene.
• Diagnostic Services
  Such as x-rays and assessments to detect potential dental issues early.
• Restorative Care
  Including fillings for cavities and repairs to damaged teeth.
• Endodontic Services
  Root canal treatments on select teeth when necessary.
• Periodontal Care
  Treatment for gum disease including deep cleaning and related procedures.
• Prosthodontic Services
  Coverage for removable dentures to restore function and appearance.
• Oral Surgery
  Includes extractions and certain other necessary surgical interventions.

It’s important to note that the CDCP may not fully cover all costs. Dentists are not required to participate in the program, and some may charge fees above the CDCP’s set reimbursement rates.
