5 Things to Look for When Choosing a Dentist.

Choosing a Dentist

Opening your mouth wide and letting someone peer into “the window of your body” is a vulnerability usually reserved for few people. Your dentist has a significant responsibility that comes with caring for your oral health and earning your trust. As we discussed many times in other posts that your dental health also plays a major role in your overall health and wellbeing. Therefore, choosing a dentist to be “your dentist” is no trivial matter. So here are 5 things to look for when choosing a dentist.

Caring and Friendly Staff

Most people don’t enjoy going to the dentist, but the visit can be enjoyable if the staff are friendly, caring, and efficient. Good customer service is rare these days, but it makes all the difference between a bad experience and a good one. If your dental clinic staff care and respect your time, and provide personal professional service, then you have found an important first reason to choose them as your dental clinic.

Good Reviews and Referrals

Ask others, especially ones in related fields, like your family doctor or pharmacist. Ask, “who is a good dentist in the Kitchener-Waterloo area?” Look for reviews on social media and Google reviews. When checking reviews check how many there are, and how negative reviews are replied to. Word of mouth is often the best indicator of a good dentist.

Current with New Technology

Does the prospective dentist keep up to date with new dental technology? Orthodontics have been revolutionised with Invisalign. Digital Xray machines provide faster, clearer imaging using less radiation. COVID-19 has demanded changes in protocols, and equipment. Sterilization and disinfecting equipment for dental instruments have improved. Does your dentist keep up with important changes in dental technology or are they stuck in the past?

One Stop for All Services

Are all the services offered preformed onsite? Or do you have to go to other clinics to get specialised work done? Some dentists claim to preform certain services only to sub out the work acting as a middleman. Getting all your dental work done under one roof has its advantages. The comfort level achieved and the trust you have built doesn’t need to be interrupted by going somewhere else. And it’s convenient to have everything from cleanings and root canals, to emergencies and wisdom tooth surgery, all under one roof.

Logistics

Speaking of convenience, when it comes to picking the right dentist, they should be relatively close and accessible for you. Is there parking, and is it easy to park there? Or is it close to public transit? Do the office hours suit my schedule? Do they work with my insurance company, how do they make me pay? How far are they willing to go to make things convenient for me? Are they punctual or do they make me wait?

The best dental office is not always the multi-million-dollar clinic with the reef tank in the waiting room. Because rather than watching fish swim around, wouldn’t you rather be getting your teeth done? Choosing the right dentist can be easy, with just 5 things to look for when choosing a dentist.
