Oral Health Month
April is Oral Health Month in Canada! The reason to have an “Oral Health Month” (OHM) is to promote an awareness of the importance of maintaining good oral health practices. This special attention was started and promoted by the World Dental Federation or FDI (French Abbreviation) who declared March 20th as “World Oral Health Day” to encourage Governments, health associations, and the general public to work together to achieve healthier mouths and in extension, happier lives. The United States made February their OHM, but in Canada April is the time we take special note of our dental health. Probably because the days are brighter, and things seam more doable or achievable with winter behind us. Canada’s 2023 theme is “Oral Health for Total Health”.

National Dental Hygienists Week
The Canadian Dental Hygienist Association is on board and have also declared April 4th to 10th, 2023 “National Dental Hygienists Week”. They’re making an effort to help Canadians understand the role and importance of the dental hygiene profession. Timing couldn’t be better as a significant shortage of Hygienists has been a trend in Ontario for several years now. Are you interested in becoming a Dental Hygienist? Talk to your guidance counselor or your Hygienist at Erbsville Dental and ask questions, it may be a career you’re suited for? This year’s theme “Oral Health for Total Health” reminds Canadians that taking care of our mouth, teeth and gums positively impacts our overall health and makes for a happier life. It’s similar to the expressions made by organizers of World Oral Health Day but reminds us we have assistance to achieve our goals, our Hygienists.
How to Celebrate OHM
So, how does a person celebrate or take part in Oral Health Month? On March 20th and for the whole month of April focus on your oral routine. Are you brushing properly? Are you and your young children spending enough time brushing and flossing? It is recommended that you spend at least 2 minutes twice a day brushing. Ideally you should brush and floss 30 minutes after each meal. Children need help doing a good job and developing good dental habits. Eat foods that promote dental health and avoid those that can hurt your teeth. Show some appreciation to your Dentist and especially your Hygienist during April 4-10. Give them a good Google Review. Nothing says thank you like public commendation. Make an appointment to get a cleaning / checkup, or get anything fixed that needs to be done.
Erbsville Dental wishes you and your family a happy World Oral Health Day, National Dental Hygienists Week, and Oral Health Month (April). May your teeth and gums be healthy and may your lives be happier as a result!
